Your future local NHS health services
- moving towards clinical commissioning groups
What is a clinical commissioning group?
Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were formed to drive forward a new era in NHS healthcare. Our role is to lead on strategic planning to tackle our area's healthcare needs, and to work with budget holders to buy in the right services to meet those needs.
Under the NHS reforms in the Health and Social Care Act, CCGs like ours are set to take on many of the functions currently performed by local primary care trusts. In readiness for that change-over, we were formed in a ‘shadow' role in April 2011. This means that we are increasingly taking on healthcare commissioning responsibilities and developing our organisation in preparation for authorisation as statutory bodies by 2013.
We are currently setting out our future health and healthcare priorities and strategies.
Among these priorities is helping to tackle the excessive pressures on the city's emergency care facilities, such as A&E.
