Your future local NHS health services
- moving towards clinical commissioning groups

West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (WL CCG) represents the 50 GP practices who serve around 356,000 patients in Charnwood North, Charnwood South, North West Leicestershire, and Hinckley and Bosworth.

What is a clinical commissioning group?

Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were formed to drive forward a new era in NHS healthcare. Our role is to lead on strategic planning to tackle our area's healthcare needs, and to work with budget holders to buy in the right services to meet those needs.

Under the NHS reforms in the Health and Social Care Act, CCGs like ours are set to take on many of the functions currently performed by local primary care trusts. In readiness for that change-over, we were formed in a ‘shadow' role in April 2011.

This means that we are increasingly taking on healthcare commissioning responsibilities and developing our organisation in preparation for authorisation as a statutory body in 2013.

Current projects

We are currently setting out our future health and healthcare priorities and strategies and are undertaking two public consultations, as follows:

Online leaflet on Common Childhood Illnesses

Almost all babies, toddlers and children aged up to five will get most common childhood illnesses at some time. So it's worth finding out a little more about these common, everyday illnesses, like colds, sore throats, ear infections and chickenpox. This handbook by West Leicestershire CCG explains and reassures you about what you can do at home; but there is information about what to do and who to contact if you are still worried or need further advice. Use this link to see the online interactive version (you will need Flash player). Use this link to see a non-interactive version (requires Adobe Reader).

Health in West Leicestershire

West Leicestershire GPs have been seeking people's views of what works well, and what doesn't work well in local healthcare. People who live in Hinckley and Bosworth, Charnwood, or North West Leicestershire have been completing questionnaires as part of a consultation to help us establish our health priorities.

Urgent care in Loughborough

We want to ensure that when people need urgent care, they can receive it as effectively as possible. We also want to work with other parts of the NHS to ensure that local services, such as our community hospitals, are as effective as possible in bringing care closer to home. So we asked people what they thought about our plans to move the urgent care service at the Walk-In Centre to Loughborough Hospital. The results of this consultation fed into the decisions on the future of urgent care in the area. See media release following the Board decision.
