Transforming Community Services

Transforming Community Services is a programme to move the responsibility for the community health services currently managed by Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to other organisations.

The Department of Health have asked PCTs to carry out this change so that there is a clear separation between organisations that provide services and those that commission (buy) services.

However, as we put this change into place across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we are looking at the opportunities to join up services more effectively for patients to improve quality and patient experience, as well as help all local NHS providers work in a more cost-effective way.

The programme aims to move all affected services into their respective organisations by 1 April 2011.

Currently the two local PCTs (NHS Leicester City and NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland) employ around 4,100 staff in their community health services and deliver services worth around £160m. Between them they have over a million contacts with patients and service users per year.

The Transforming Community Services questionnaire has now closed, with more than 120 respondents. Find out more about the results of this questionnaire.

All feedback from staff and public engagement has been collated to inform the Transforming Community Services business case.

The board has now approved the Transforming Community Services business case for submission to the Strategic Health Authority. This will see the transfer of services currently provided by NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland's Community Health Services (CHS) to other NHS provider organisations. The board also supported the further development of a social enterprise bid for CHS elective services by employees.

The Transforming Community Services business case gives an overall view of engagement with stakeholders including staff and the public.
