You're Welcome

What do you need to do?

1. Register your service with Carmen Jenkins, a form can be requested from Carmen.Jenkins@lcr.nhs.uk or you will find one under the ‘Getting Involved' heading on the PCT/CHS internet/intranet. Remember to ensure that the name you use to register your service is distinct so that it cannot be confused for another service. I.e. Type "CAMHS Western Street" in the name field, rather than just "CAMHS".

2. Once you have registered, you will be sent an introductory service self assessment questionnaire to ascertain where you are currently bench marked against the criteria. Carmen will arrange a visit to your service to introduce the You're Welcome quality self assessment toolkit.

3. Once you have received the YW introduction, you are free to complete the self assessment toolkit at your own speed, though we do have an expectation that it shouldn't really take longer than 6 months to complete. As the toolkit is a word document you will be sent a copy electronically and given a paper copy at your initial visit, along with any other supporting information. The toolkits are numbered so we ask that you do not share with other services to prevent confusion and so that we can monitor who has which toolkit for auditing purposes.

4. We recommend that the standards and toolkit are discussed in a team setting and agreement reached regarding who will be responsible for each section. As you go through the toolkit, develop an action plan to raise standards, even if you believe that you already meet You're Welcome. Remember that not only one person has to be responsible for the toolkit, you may find it useful to share it out amongst several staff, for example you could disseminate to admin support as part of their professional development.

5. Make sure you "save" your work before you move away from it.

6. You will need to ensure that you have met the essential criteria before it can be assessed for accreditation.

  • 1.4 - Access to abortion- You will need a "Conscientious Objector" Policy
  • 1.5 - Making appointments and attending consultations alone
  • 1.7 - DDA Compliance- Where you site is not compliant what are the arrangements to use alternative sites? How is this communicated to young people?
  • 3.1 - Confidentiality and consent policy - Written and specifically mentioning young people
  • 3.2 - Confidentiality training of staff
  • 3.3 - Display of the confidentiality and consent policy
  • 4.1 - Young people friendly environment- All appropriate staff (having 1:1 contact and/or access to records) are CRB checked.
  • 7.2 - Young people's services evaluation and feedback- Need to demonstrate systematic involvement of young people and evidence of changes made as a consequence. This means ‘regular' and not ‘one off' methods of interaction/gaining the views of young people.

7. When you consider that you have met the standards, you submit your completed toolkit to Carmen Jenkins. In the first instance the toolkit will be desk based verified; if the desk based verification is successful, the toolkit will go to the local moderation panel who will decide whether to carry out a verification inspection.

8. Along side the professional inspections; there will be young people inspections, the method of which will be negotiated with the young people involved. (In the case of educational institutions this will have to be from their own students).
