Mental health

There is good evidence that physical activity, both single sessions and regular ones, can improve mental wellbeing - especially in reducing anxiety and depression.

It can also improve a person's physical health.

It doesn't need to be at a gym - try a brisk walk, dig the garden or walk to a friend's.  There is also free swimming available at all local leisure centres for under 16s and over 60s.  More information can be found on the Leicestershire and Rutland Sport website.

You could contact your local leisure centre or library for information on walking groups in your area.

Information on mental health, including how to find a therapist, information for carers and a video on coping with depression can be found on the NHS Choices site. If you are a carer in the Wigston and Oadby district and are isolated at home, you may be interested in the 'Telephone befriending scheme for carers'.

At LAMP direct you can find out about what is happening on a range of mental health issues both locally and nationally.

As well as all the latest mental health news, you can find out about what services you can access using the LAMP Directory.  The information section also provides guidance and signposting on a range of issues and for specific groups.

More help and advice for depression and anxiety can be found on the Beating the blues website.
