Healthy Ramadan

Fasting during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan can be good for your health if it's done correctly. For 2011 Ramadan begins on Sunday night 31 July or early Monday 1 August, depending on the sighting of the moon, and lasts for 30 days.

As the Ramadan fast only lasts from dawn till dusk, the body's energy can be replaced in the pre-dawn and dusk meals. After a few days of the fast, higher levels of endorphins appear in the blood, making you more alert and giving an overall feeling of general mental wellbeing.

Muslims have contributed to a series NHS web pages to help people better understand what happens to the body when you fast and how to deal with some common problems. There is also a section of questions and answers, including help for people who need to take normal medication during the holy month of Ramadan.
