When you visit your dentist they check for potential problems such as tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer - these conditions can have serious consequences if left untreated. If needed, you may also be given another appointment to clean and polish your teeth.
NHS dentists can provide all the necessary treatment to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This includes treatments such as fillings, dentures, crowns and bridges.

Special care dental services
The special care dental service provides services for people who have ‘special dental needs', such as dental, medical, social or emotional needs which prevent them from receiving care elsewhere. You may also be eligible if you require treatment which is not generally available from your own dentist, such as general anaesthetics for children and learning disabled adults, and inhalation sedation for patient with additional needs.
Patients cannot refer themselves to these services, if you need them you will be referred by your dentist or other health and social care professionals.
