Registering with a GP
Everyone living in the UK permanently has the right to register with a GP. If you are not already registered or would like to change your GP, you can find information about GP practices in your area on the lists above, on the
NHS Choices website, or by telephoning 0116 295 7880.
You should be able to get an appointment with your GP within 48 hours of calling to arrange one. If you need to, you should also be able to book appointments further in advance.
We've been working with our practices to improve opening hours for the benefit of patients, and the majority of our practices now stay open for longer, offering evening and weekend surgeries. Please check with your GP surgery to confirm their opening hours. Many practices also have
patient participation groups - volunteers who meet up regularly to help shape our services and facilities.
Your GP may also be able to offer you some tests and treatments which you may have gone to hospital for in the past. Check with your practice what is available there.
Out of hours service
Need medical help when your GP surgery is closed?
For URGENT medical care that cannot wait until your GP surgery opens, call your GP practice to get through to the out of hours service. If you cannot get through to the service via your practice, or you have not yet registered with a GP practice you can contact them direct on 0845 045 0411
The service is open from 6.30pm to 8.00am Monday to Friday, and all day Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.
The out of hours centre deals with calls from patients registered with practices in Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland.
A trained call handler will answer your call and help you to get the right advice or treatment for your condition.
Please be ready to provide the following information:
- patient's name
- patient's date of birth
- contact telephone number
- the name of the patient's GP or practice
- brief details about the patient's condition or healthcare problem
This will help us to provide the appropriate treatment for the urgent healthcare problem and to keep the patient's GP informed about their treatment out of hours.
