If you are unwell or injured, there is a range of NHS services to help you, and you don't always need to see your GP or visit A&E. By choosing the right service for your symptoms you will help all our services run efficiently.

Self care
A range of common illnesses and complaints can be treated with a well-stocked medicine cabinet and plenty of rest. 
 

NHS Direct

Confidential health advice and information by phone, through digital TV and on-line, 24 hours a day. NHS Direct can also signpost to local health services. Experts provide advice and answers to health-related questions in the shortest possible time.
 
So, if you are worried about your child's cough or cold, or you are not sure you know the difference between a rash and meningitis, call NHS Direct for an initial diagnosis and advice on next steps. They can also inform you where to go for treatment for broken bones, sprains and minor accidents that involve a bump to the head.

Pharmacy

Confidential, expert advice for a range of common illnesses and complaints, without having to wait for a GP appointment.
 
If you are concerned about your child's cough, cold, temperature, sore throat or ear ache, your pharmacist can advise you on the best way to treat it.
 
 
Or text 'pharmacy' to 64746 and receive three free texts with details of your nearest pharmacies
 

Your GP

If you have an illness or injury that won't go away, telephone your GP to make an appointment. If your GP practice is closed you will be directed to the out of hours service. 
 

 

NHS Walk-in Centre

Convenient access to a range of treatments for minor illnesses and injuries that don't need an appointment or a trip to a hospital.
 

 

A&E

A&E departments and the 999 ambulance service should only be used in a critical or life-threatening situation.
