About us

Leicestershire County and Rutland Primary Care Trust (PCT) was established on 1 October 2006, replacing the former Charnwood and North West Leicestershire, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, Rutland and Harborough and South Leicestershire PCTs.

Our organisation has joined forces with NHS Leicester City to form a 'cluster' of PCTs, an interim stage in preparation for the transfer of most healthcare commissioning functions to clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) as part of the current NHS reforms. However, our two PCTs remain legally separate organisations. Primary care trusts like ours are set to disappear by 2013, subject to Parliament passing the Health and Social Care Bill.

NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland serves a population of around 677,900 who live mainly in the geographical area represented by Leicestershire and Rutland county councils. The area we cover is illustrated on this map. Find out more about our mission and values. NHS Leicester City serves a population of around 300,000 people in the area covered by Leicester City Council. See the web site for NHS Leicester City.

A commissioning organisation buys specialist healthcare services for patients, such as acute hospital care, mental health and disabilities services, and ambulance services. It also contracts with GPs, dentists, pharmacists, optometrists and other independent primary care providers.
